This quarter I’m working on a very different project. I’ve been photographing friends and loved ones and asking them about some of the darkest or seemingly most hopeless periods of their life. It started off as a way for me to process a lot of what I’ve personally been struggling with the past year and a half, but it’s slowly becoming an opportunity for me to conversations with people about their own struggles and realize how much we aren’t alone in our own fears.

AWESOME SIDE NOTE: IF YOU LIVE IN THE SAVANNAH, GA AREA I WILL BE PART OF A GROUP EXHIBITION FROM NOVEMBER 9TH TO NOVEMBER 15TH. CONTACT ME FOR MORE DETAILS!

anonymous 1anonymous.© Savannah Jaye Thomas, Fall 2011

This image is part of a series I did with the intention of questioning the photograph’s (and the subject’s) identity: how we judge it, how we identify it, and how we determine its significance. Ultimately I hope to challenge the ideas of aesthetic beauty that are often used to identify an artwork’s (or a person’s) value.

This image is from my final project for my studio lighting class. It was my first time working with double exposures so I was surprised by how some of the images turned out. However, I’m definitely still interested in the act of blending images both digitally and by hand, and I’m working on perfect some of these concepts and processes with a project that I’ve started working on this fall.

This is a photo from a shoot I did with some friends to celebrate New Year’s Day this year. My roommates and several of our friends all left our house at 6 am and drove out to Tybee Island (a local beach about 30 minutes away) to celebrate the beginning of a new year. It was a really special moment for me to be surrounded by my friends as we celebrated the beginning of a new (and hopefully better) year.

This photograph was part of a 10 image portrait series from my studio lighting class this summer. This series was heavily inspired by abstract expressionism and the ultimate goal was to allow the subject the opportunity to present their self in a way that is not typical for our society. Each person was presented with a white v-neck tshirt and fingers paints and allowed to express their own creativity in whatever way they deemed appropriate. One of the most interesting aspects of this project for me is getting to compare the “before” and “after” shots and seeing how the two images either complimented or contrasted each other.

bridget.the individual.©Savannah Jaye Thomas, July 2012

This series was heavily inspired by abstract expressionism and the ultimate goal was to allow the subject the opportunity to present their self in a way that is not typical for our society. Each person was presented with a white v-neck tshirt and fingers paints and allowed to express their own creativity in whatever way they deemed appropriate. One of the most interesting aspects of this project for me is getting to compare the “before” and “after” shots and seeing how the two images either complimented or contrasted each other.

gloria.the individual.©Savannah Jaye Thomas, July 2012
